How is it possible for somebody like Trump (whose actions show a blatant
disregard for Biblical teachings) to be popular among Evangelicals?.
The reasons behind this unique phenomenon are explained in The Week article.
Among several reasons, what we might think is a demographic under the large
umbrella of Evangelical Christianity is also composed of persons identifying
themselves as such, but who actually know little about the actual statements in
the Bible and how Trump's actions run counter to Biblical injunctions.
For example, in Charisma, May 2016, writer Michael L. Brown in "Can We
Question Donald Trump's Christianity?", brings up Eph.4:29 where Paul says "Let
no unwholesome word proceed out of your mouth, but only that which is good for
building up, that it may give grace to the listeners". Then Brown goes on to
mention "Trump's vitriolic, nasty, often vulgar, sometimes patently false
attacks on others violate this verse from beginning to end, both in spirit and
in letter.". Brown concludes: "...let's not foolishly proclaim him to be a
Christian....".
Getting back to The Week article, the solution to conundrum of how
Evangelicals can support Trump is given. The so-called Evangelicals are simply
not "real" Christians. They are heretics in the Conservative viewpoint and
that demographic contains large numbers of persons simply identifying
themselves as such, but having little understanding of the "true" literal
Biblical interpretations.
