It seems, according to Patañjali, the Fourth (chaturtha, scil. praaNaayaama) is 
the conditio sine qua non of 
 dhaaraNaa:

 Perhaps the locative plural (dhaaraNaasu) collectively, so to speak, refers
 to dhaaraNaa, dhyaana and samaadhi, i.e, saMayma??
