sites that rely on the rule (it also means we cannot easily update site

I too have been having problems with the HP rule. I've tried Phillips
suggestion but can not get a consistent working rule.
The bummer part of Geoffs suggestion to create a rule for each content type

Personally I'd look at just dropping hand picked and writing a specific
rule for the individual content types you want to have listed. Rules plus
fapi.getcontentobjects are about the tastiest customization you can make.
