www.sane-project.org has a convenient list of compatible scanners.
I, personally, use the Cannon MF-4270. I had to hack some bugs out of sane's
pixma driver, but once I did that, it worked fine.

Epson CX7400 printer and scanner work with FC6, using the driver from the
vendor. As of FC8 or early FC9 the driver wasn't updated. Since I can keep FC6

Ok. I can understand the reasoning for that. But, why would I only
have access to the printer/scanner when signed on as root and not as a
local user? This is the problem that I am running into. Every time I
wish to use the scanner, I need to switch
