Shirley,
I see what you are saying.
I guess I might be doing about the same thing when I go down a few sizes to
knit my homespun. I knit an inch or two and measure stitches per inch until

My favorite subject...reading sources.
You seemed to have missed the Interweave magazines, Spin-Off for spinning,
Handwoven for weaving and Interweave Knits for knitting. they are all
really good. the Interweave Knit magazines has improved greatly since
Melanie Falick has become editor and it wa
I am not that experienced...about 6 years weaving now...but the warp thread
doesnt go straight in weaving, it goes over and under the weft threads and
some length has to be added for that. the same for the weft.
. right now I am weaving with 8/2 cotton and I have found that it gets a

My first loom was a Harrisville. it is a very nice loom for fabrics, etc,
but not a heavy duty loom like a larger leclerk, etc. I eventually sold it
after I found an older purrington which is a more solid loom. . and I didnt
ask anything near $800 either, but being the second owner, I didnt have
I have a watson wheel. It costs way less than a drudic and you can actually
have it and spin on it in less than a lifetime.
at the time I ordered the

I think I got a pretty full set of 32" circulars at Michaels. Maybe for
afghan knitting? I picked out the 40% off coupons for several weeks and
they were a good price too. they were called quicksilver (Susan Bates?)or
something and are pretty good for metal circular needles. (I am not a

I bet this has come up before.
I have made socks of suffolk and they wash ok in the machine with warm water
in a wash bag on the delicate cycle. they tightened up a bit the first time
(good) and have stayed the same since.

Ha!
perhaps you noticed the two nancy's from Michigan with similar opinions
about 'summer' wools and silks. i bet it is the climate and not the first
name. I wear my silks when the temp is in the 80's but for the 90's (upper
80's even) with Michigan humidity I only wear natural cottons and linen
Years ago I made a couple of very light weight wool suits for work. I could
wear them until June, then not until October. it can be quite humid here in
Michigan. As for silk blouses, only the very lightest will work in summer
and I wash them in the washing machine (in bags, lukewarm and delicate
Colors have value independant to white and gray and black which are not
colors but shades. for instance , blue, red and purple are pretty dark, and
yellow is very light. orange and green having yellow in them are in between.
Look at a black and white photo(if any still exist!) of things you know
just think 'loose' when you cast on. the two needle thing is for beginners
who dont yet have control of the process. look at the spaces between the
stitches and keep them even. no need for different or two needles. Ah, and
if you dont like it, just start over; the world wont end.

three fibers thick! that sound like the quilter's 10 stitches to the inch.
When I began quilting, (didnt last long) someone told me to look at
Greenfield village and see how many stitches an inch there were and believe
me the 10 stitch thing is a goal not a measure of competance.

I just wandered into Borders and there it was, so I sat down and read a bit.
My spouse told to me to just buy it and not fuss around looking for a
better deal (it happens to be my birthday) so I did. I paid full price. I
know, I know I should go find a fiber merchant, but you know, I actually

Actually I think anything that can be done with handspun is fair, and good
for us fiber people to consider. Now I weave but I didnt before and Spin
off had a lot to do with that. someday I may try bobbin lace, who knows? I
wouldnt even have considered it without spin off. or Kuminio or whatever
The impression I get is that the two magazines, especially handwoven, have
decided to speak to beginners and assume that beginners have no interest in
lovely intricate projects beyond their skill level. I am a beginner -
spinning 6 years and weaving 5 - and dont really agree.

It is not my favorite sweater either. For one thing, I have nothing against
