Crikey, what is going on? You use gamma 1 and Alex is using 0.8. Aren't the results
dark? I use gamma 2.2 (W98)

Hello,
as you can see from the post below from another mailing list,

Normally I set my buffer to 5% because I always use maximum crop and later crop in PS.

I suggest that you have set Vuescan to "White Balance". It it taking the
yellow of the sand (which I guess is the brightest part of the image) and
"neutralising" it to look like a shade of grey (i.e. pure white in the bright
spots). That's what the 0.1% white point is doing.

On slide film I'm usually around 1.8, but negs is almost always 1.0 Maybe Ed has a

There are a number of traditional reasons why MF films have been used in
wedding and portrait photography. In the not so distant past, a lot of
touch up work was done directly on the negs, and MF allowed for this
more simply.
Further the usually square format allowed for variable cropping, and

It would appear I have gotten the ear of the upper Minolta people (at
least here in Canada)

Tony,
Why don't you auto send a FAQs every month or so with the archive address
etc. It's a busy list so I don't think people would mind, would they...?
The fine movement is controled by a precision worm gear of which a portion
is highly calibrated at the factory. This information is stored in the
firmware so we know EXACTLY where the slide is in relation to its position

The only slide films I've shot in quantity are Kodachrome 64 & Extachrome
(200 & 400), all within the range of DMax (Kodachrome pushes the limit). I

Try going into the control panel > “Scanners

That worked for me.

Usually use a gamma of 2.2 here in Vuescan, but I remember Mikael Risdael suggesting a
lower figure could improve results.

About VueScan and gamma settings.

On my LS-4000 scanning Provia 400F slides I usually end up at gamma 2.4, with a
brightness of 1.3 or so (white point 0.001). The histograms look fine when I get into
Photoshop. I wonder if the physical film type, or maybe the media type and color
balance settings change the gamma and brightne

Your presumption is correct. I have had Nikonscan (various versions) and
Vuescan (lots of versions) living happily together under Win 95
Make sure you have your scanner on BEFORE you start vuescan, it does a scsi bus scan
on startup.

Peter, did you have to load ASPI drivers to get the Nikon scanner working
in Win2K?

I want to be sure the bulk slide feeder for the SS4000 series works with all
slide mounts. I have also been told the there are more different types of
mounts in Europe. Any information, manufacturer part numbers or actual
sample would be appreciated. You can contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Preferably switch the scanner on before you switch on the PC, or you'll
have to do a refresh in Device Manager before any software can see it.

Hi Rob,
I have it but have never installed it since I use Photoshop all the time.
Here's the page on Adobe's web site that describes all the features:
