Howard,
Photocal warns me when I update the drivers from my ATI Radeon 7500 on

I have Vuescan but have not so far been able to get it to work as well as
the Minolta plug-in especially on dense
Hi David.
The Digital ROC and Digital GEM that are included with the scanners can only
be used at the time of the scan.
The Digital ROC plug in can be used with any digital image. There is no
Digital GEM plug in... yet.

I'm thinking of buying one of these secondhand. This would be my first
film scanner. What would be the maximum price I should pay for one and
what is the quality like?
The LS-30 is pretty decent as far as optical quality is concerned. I
wouldn't pay more than $300 for it second-hand, though,
Is the glass replaceable? Anti-Newton ring glass does exist. Darkroom
enthusiasts often use it when they sandwich their negatives between glass in
enlarger negative carriers.

Further to my earlier post about the Nikon, I have also seen a Minolta
scan dual 2 being sold secondhand, how does this compare? As I am in the
UK our prices are somewhat more expensive, so what should I expect to
pay for this Minolta. I understand that it has no Digital Ice, but does
this

I don't think there is much difference between the Elite and the Scan
Speed. at least from my experience with the scan speed and seeing other
people's scans with the Elite. It boils down to practice. There is so
much more noise in the shadows of minolta's plug in
I am and have been entirely satisfied with mine, and I primarily use Vuescan
with it. I paid $500 for a refurb before the new batch came out, so Major
Andras's suggestion of $300 tops sounds about right.
I have not had problems with the film strip feeder, but then I've scanned no

Many of my films are old and scratched through poor processing labs, so I
have found Digital Ice (and Vuescan's IR-channel dust scratch removal)
invaluable.

HELLO ALL,
I AM ABOUT TO
Many manufacturers of glass slide mounts make anti-newton ring glass. If
you can get a few sample slide mounts, that is all you need. Gepe is a good
brand.
These work well in the Polaroid scanners.
If you are familiar with a focomat enlarger, try to duplicate what they are
doing. Otherwise,
The cause of Newton Rings is when a space is created between two finely
polished or glossy surfaces that is a very small space equal to or a
small multiple of white light wavelengths, which then cause interference
colors via the reflection between the surfaces. The best way to avoid
them
Hi Andre,
I've not been ignoring you. I wanted to contact someone off-list who
had a FS4000 to see if he might wish to comment, I left it with him.
I have only reviewed scans from this scanner, not having used it. I
would expect from the result I saw that the SS4000 was less noisy than
the FS

The Minolta Dual Scan II uses a six frame film carrier, and a four frame
slide carrier. The slide carrier is a bit of a kludge, in my opinion.
Regarding dICE, I own the Minolta Scanner in question, and I would say
it would be very nice if it did have dICE. Although it isn't quite as
bad as the
Count me as another very pleased LS-30 user. To get the best out of it, you need
to understand the capabilities of the hardware and the software -- but the same
is true of any scanner.
I have had no trouble with the motorised Strip Film Adapter (SA-20), but it does
not hold the film as flat as
Best of luck, and we look forward to your comments once you make a decision.
