I'm experiencing a similar situation on a PC running Win98SE.  The image is
a lovely shade of green with no real colour information.  I actually get
some colour ( albeit very washed out ) if the slide setting is selected.  I
still had version 6.4.7 so I reinstalled it and the negative setting seemed
to work ok.
