Give us a break, Art. It's a legitimate beef, newcomer or not, and
responding to perceived presumptuousness with pomposity isn't helpful.
Now let's please drop it before it becomes another irrelevant OT thread.

Tony,
I would hate to see you close the list. I, for one, have learned a lot from

Not to add to the weight of this thread but with a Minolta Scan Dual II I
experience the same kinds of 'noise (just using this term generically -

I agree with those wanting the keep the auto-increment feature. Maybe it's
as a result of my poor skill level but I find it to be a great help with
multiple 'Scan(s) from memory'.

I'm really happy with it. Sold a Nikon N70 on ebay for a great price, got a
great Internet price on the N80 - I'm a happy camper! I love the dials for
setting f stop shutter and the grid lines.
I'll tell you, though, it's a complicated little machine. Tough for my

Ed, you're a wonder. I've certainly seen lot's of software that is more
quirky than Vuescan, and not as effective. Your openness and willingness to
take gripes as suggestions to improve your product is, to say the least,
refreshing.
It's a great product and one of if not THE BEST software bang
I played with my exposures to see how the film would react to slight
under-exposure in an attempt to heighten the contrast a bit but only went
under by 1/2 stop. The film's latitude must be very wide as I couldn't
really detect any difference from 'properly' exposed shots.

They can't really think I wanted that, can they?
They may not have a choice. I'd guess that most minilabs would only have
colour paper, and it's just not possible to get true greyscale on colour
paper.
Well, we'll see. I finally got hold of a phone number for the Kodak lab.
After I call the
shot a roll 4 full stops underexposed, trying to capture the effects
of a certain safety light we were marketing. The film came back perfectly
exposed, warts and all, which *wasn't* exactly what I was shooting for. :-)

reason for this, although I know that the CN film can be printed on either

I wanted to seek the input of list participants into the question of
minimizing grain and noise in 35mm scans. While it varies according to
subject matter, predominant color, film type and speed, all scans seem to
have some degree of grain / noise not found in the prints. I've used both

I too have a Scan Dual II and never had a problem using it with Vuescan.
It's always found the scanner, no problem. However, I need to make sure the
scanner is on first, then fire up Vuescan.

I really appreciated your workflow description, especially the part about
trying to use Vuescan settings that will capture all data on the slide /

I've had a number of niggling PC hardware problems using the Minolta

I have this exact same problem with my Minolta Scan Dual II. I can get to a
pretty good 'crop' image in Vuescan but the raw scans are generally very
washed out.
