levels of gray (i.e. less bit depth) is easily compensated for by
a higher
resolution --- that's the basic principle of halftoning or of
stochastic dithering in
printing.

Brad,
You are probably right that -- This conversation is only about bit
depth.
But I think that is one of the main shortcomings of the discussion.
Resolution
size brush you like (big is best I think). Also use a low Opacity like
10% to 20%.
Paint over the image. If you do a lot it may be necessary to move up
the
History state.
This method is really nice because it avoids clipping the
shadows/highlights.

A much better way to do burning/dodging that works in both 8 and 16
bit
files
is to use the History Brush. Simply select the History Brush, click
on
the
current state in the History palette. Now
. With multiple
passes you average several samples getting a more accurate measurement.
You are increasing your resolution beyond the random noise level; when
you get down to the quantization level its a hard limit on resolution.
That's the best you can do.

Austin, I hope you are willing to print this out with Piezo and

of resolution. What is the resolution? At
the very dense end the resolution is a whole stop i.e. 0.30D units.
At the other end it's close to .3/2048 or 0.00015D units.
So, again, I can't feel the concept of resolution is very
meaningful -- its just too varied.

I hope you can spend some considering what I have written, I've spent
