I have a similar problem with my Sprintscan when I scan B&W negs. I
sometimes get a "bleed" from dark area into light. I'd be interested in
what others have to say.

Is there no longer a 'Clean' feature for the Sprintscan4000? I see only
'Grain Reduction.'

I have a neg of a bride in window light and her gown is burned out. Any
suggestions for bringing in detail in the scan process?

I'm having a problem with the most recent Vuescan: the final scan doesn't
match the preview, neither in the Vuescan window, nor in Photoshop. When I
switch back to 7.4.2 it works fine. I may be doing something wrong, but I
can't find it. Any ideas?

an as rgb you'll
get different tones. The grain is most likely due to your scanner scanning
more sharply than your lab prints. Also, some labs print their b&w minilab
stuff digitally, so your scanner may be sharper than theirs.

Works great every time. Is there a way to make this adjustment in Vuescan?
I'm sure there is, but I'm just not sure how. Also, is it better to make
this adjustment at the scanning stage in Vuescan, or in the post scan stage
in Photoshop?

Makes perfect sense. Thanks Tony.

b&w negs on my Sprintscan 4000, and I suspect I need to make some
adjustments. What is the best way to begin? The scans that show
posterization have extreme ranges of light to dark. Is posterization
unavoidable on these types of images?
STEPHENJENNINGS
P h o t o
Tony, I generally work the way you describe; produce a 16bit file, open in
Photoshop, adjust levels and curves in 16 bit. The posterization appears in
the 16 bit file. I'll take your advice and rescan. What adjustment would
you suggest I try first?

Not stupid at all; first thing I checked. Set for millions of colors.

The histogram looks fine, and the prints look ok too; I only see the
posterization on the monitor. I suspect the profiling s/w as well, although
my monitor is pretty old (>5 yrs) and may be part of the problem.

You might consider the Polaroid Sprintscan 4000. The scanner is excellent;
there are several scanner programs available for it, including Insight,
Vuescan, Silverfast and binuscan and several of the Polaroid support people
are on this list and can help you out.

Go Ed! Sorry I can't answer your question, but I'm sure someone out there
will. A multiple pass capability on the Sprintscan 4000 would be great.

Perhaps it's not a problem; is it ok to have some 0 values in an image? I'm

Tony, for us users of Vuescan on a Mac scanning for output to an Epson
Printer, would 1.8 be good gamma starting point? Vuescan defaults to 2.2,
I'm guessing because most users are on Windows.

Ed, just loaded 7.0.20.1 and I now get 2 Help dialog boxes. Also, as
Vuescan loads it flashes several times like it's drawing and redrawing
quickly. Not a problem; just thought you'd like to know.
