Obviously this is a danger in using mnemonic systems. :-)

ardware companies try a little harder than Acer has. It's
really a shame, because overall my 2740 is a nice piece of hardware for the
price -- but I can't recommend one without lots of qualifications.

Of course, you couldn't pay me to use a Maxtor drive anyway, due to some

it's easier to see if the meter gave the right exposure. When I do use print

I can certainly do so. Every few days I scan another batch. Next time I'll
try to remind myself to grab a stopwatch first.

gh, as
Andrew Brooks has pointed out: GIMP does not support 48-bit TIFF's. Does
anyone know of any image editing package on Linux which does? I'd prefer to
keep the cropped images in 48-bit TIFF until the very final step, then
output 24-bit JPEG for web use.

Eddie,
PCI is 33MHz: megahertz, not megabytes. Since PCI is a 32-bit bus, the
maximum transfer rate is actually 132MB/sec. And some higher-end machi
urn policy (just in case). The 30 days have long expired, but the 2740 is
still sitting here. I like it in spite of its flaws. And it works quite well
if you throw out MiraPhoto and use VueScan instead.
