I disagree ... what we end up with in Photoshop should never go thru the gamut funnel you describe above. What we end up in Photoshop should be the result of as few profile conversions as possible, and only one should be needed ... i.e.: sorry, didnt i say that? device space = scanner

Upon closer use of vuescan 7.3.6: When BP is set to 0 or at 0.0001 i get unexpected RGB=0 values in my scans. The complete border area of the negative stays at RGB=0, likeways some very dark points in the image. Before i had always some non rgb=0 values in this area when i wanted. I have to use

I agree with Hill James: using the histogram is functional when you have feedback on what is going to be clipped. This could be achieved by 1. indicator color on the going to be clipped part of the image (seems complex to me to realize) or by 2. a measurement tool indicating rgb levels in 16 bit

And how much Threshhold do you use? Typically 100% at 0.5-1.5 with 4000ppi images IME. Stop just short of grittiness. You should then have a decently sharp image, though if you want everything the film has got, you'll need 4000ppi. But it's quite good enough for critically sharp A3 Epson
