What MIDI device are you using for playback from Finale? If it's
anything other than the QuickTime MIDI Instruments, the change in the
file may just be a result of using a different set of synthesized
instruments.

Are you using the MIDI tool for playback and/or the expressions? The
expressions add their values to the MIDI ones, and that can give you those
very faint notes.
IMV I only use one of the two methods and never both...

I'm a FinWin2004 user, so I'm not sure my answer is applicable, but I'll
give it a stab and hope it helps. First off, General MIDI (GM) only
specifies the timbre (and rather loosely, at that), and does not specify
