Leopold Stokowski had a few things to say on this subject:

>The tone of the French horn goes to the right of the player and downward.
>From the tuba - exactly the opposite. The tone travels to the left of the
>player and upwards. from the violin the tone goes upward. If the first and
>second fiddles face each other, as they do now in the conventional
>orchestra, the tone of the first fiddles travels towards the audience, the
>tone of the second fiddles away from them. At a concert, the sound should
>travel from the stage to the audience in the most balanced and effective
>way. This simply cannot be done unless each instrument or family of
>instruments is placed to maximum advantage. So I began to experiment; the
>results were fruitful. I shall keep experimenting with every possible
>combination of placement and level. I have no system. I shall let the music
>decide, also the orchestration, the hall, and all variable conditions. For
>each a different solution may be necessary.
