way too thick and the symbol looked ridiculous at the size I needed it to

A small note about the Mac versions of the new JW plug-ins and parts: a
temporary "fix" to get them to work in parts is to start the plug-in
once in score mode. After that, they'll work in parts as well.

When you create your own Smart Line, the text in "left start" is the "molto
rit", while "a tempo" will go in the "right end" field. This will do what you
want, unless I am severely misunderstanding.

set font - change the size.
This gives acceptable results for me.
I have some alternative fermata symbols but this works fine on the
