Hmm. HP didn't catch the one I added. Actually it doesn't specifically seem
to be a problem with HP. Rather with AU. If I switch to Play Thru Midi HP
processes the expressions correctly.

Maybe try an invisible downbow articulation? Again, haven't been able to
confirm but I've been told articulations are more reliable than expressions.
Often, though, it seems to get stuck on a particular keyswitch, and I have to
resort to opening up the ARIA player and manually
