If the eighth notes each count as 1/2 beat in the 4/4 piece, you can do a "Copy and Paste" from one to the other. Were the 12/8 notes written as triplets (3 notes per beat)? You might have to change the time duration first. Or you can do the Copy and Paste, then change the time duration as needed.
