It's not what you asked for, but a fermata on the last sixteenth with a "molto
rit." or "directed" might convey the intended effect. Your solution, though, is
exactly what I would have tried.

I don't know about that (i still use 2010) but you can always change the size
and opacity of the handles under program options.
