compression -- I have no idea how to do that.

In 2006 you could use the Graphics Menu. The manual says "Place EPS,
TIFF or WMF (Windows Metafiles) graphics into your score (in Scroll or
Page View),
and assign them to a measure, a page, or a range of pages".
I don't know how to manage .gif files.
Maybe 2008 has improved this matter?

Not a GIF, but you can insert a TIF or EPS. Select the
