preferences with the Mass Mover tool selected--did the trick.

Every time I launch FinMac 2K4, it spends several seconds assigning
sounds for internal speaker playback. When I am editing extracted
parts, this is a waste of my time. Can I tell Finale to load playback
sounds only when desired? If so, how?

Try MIDI Menu/Internal Speaker/Off, and in

I could be wrong, but I don't think that is the issue. Andrew said the
problem was specifically when he launched Finale. Try one of the following:
a. Change the MIDI preferences so that

but Hal's right, go to MIDI--Internal Speaker Playback--Off.
