That happens sometimes to me as well. A couple of things to try.

1. Applications->Utilities->Disk Utility and check permissions on the drive. If it is an external drive, Verify it 2. Reboot and hold down the Apple and "S" keys. That will dump you into the Unix core of OS X. There is a little message that is displayed saying if you want to check disk type in "fsck" something. If you type those two lines in, it will check your main drive and fix any problems.

Usually, when I get the spinning mouse, it is because the boot drive's has some sort of minor error. Usually #2 works the best to fix the problem.
