when the installer was expecting ircii-20020322-2.patch, and
ircii-20020322-0.info instead of ircii-20020322-2.info. I simply cp'd
the former to the latter in both cases. The error message:

No, control-center is OK, it is gnome-core that is not up to date. You

/sw/include/libcapplet1 Should I reinstall control-center?
