You're missing the call to the window manager (quartz-wm). Rather than
making your own fresh .xinitrc, copy the system default xinitrc file
cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ~/.xinitrc
chmod u+w .xinitrc
That second line makes it possible for you to write to the file.

I tried creating the .xinitrc file from within xterminal but after I did that
Apple's X11 wouldnt even start.

up but instead of getting an xterm window I get this blank window with nuthin in

I think you then need to create a .xinitrc file and put it into your
home directory, that's where mine is. It needs to contain something
like:
source /sw/bin/init.sh
and then a line :
exec flubox &
exec xterm
Or just: exec xterm
and then open flubox from xterm
I find my .xinitrc by typing: l
