I forgot to suggest another option which was a little less lethal than a
removal, which is to rename temporarily the directory where it resides,
e.g. "sudo mv /opt/local /opt/local.bak"; and similarly if you need Fink
out of the way use "sudo mv /sw /sw.bak".

Only after wipe out Macports I managed to install BioPerl. The
commenting out strategy (#) by modifying the .profil
