in. Thus, unless you were running
the Darwin OS, you really don't want or need these ported packages.
Incidentally, Fink does need to be installed by the root user.

you to specify this on the command line with "startx --rootless" or
whatever. But you still need to have a .xinitrc file in your ~home
directory to handle some of the basic startup parameters, like your
initial windows and whatnot.
But for a real explanation (I rarely even use X
's nice that OS X
takes care of making sure that Admin accounts have access to sudo.

YOu can either download source tarballs and put them into /sw/src, where

Crap, nevermind I just read
I remember reading in a thread a ways back that the fink ssh package
supports X11 forwarding while the default Apple-installed ssh does not.
Can anyone confirm this?

. You can either install the version in Unstable
(I think it's 4.2, could be wrong though), or just use fink to install
another window manager and change the .xinitrc to use that one instead.
You will be fine then.

Tcl. I'm not sure if Tcl/Tk uses the same Tk -- I think it does,
actually. But, I'm following up on some links that some have forwarded
to me regarding Tk for OS X, too, so perhaps that is a better idea.

Maybe this is a stupid question, sorry if it is: Is the Tk library
available for Mac OS X? 'fink list | grep tk' didn't yield anything
(I'm not looking for Gtk), but maybe it's already installed or something.

Paul,
Thank you, but yes, I use /sw/bin/bash as my default shell, though. But
there is something related:
I noticed that whenever I execute /usr/bin/which and it fails to find
the file, it would say "no foo in /sw/bin /sw/sbin /sw/bin /sw/sbin
/usr/bin /bin /Users/eprice/bin (etc)". But whe
This works, but I think it might be easier to just edit the
perlmod/Fink/SelfUpdate.pm, unless for some reason that's a bad idea.
Thanks Charles.

Max,
I finally decided to upgrade to 0.3.2a, and upon running "fink
selfupdate" I got hung when Fink tried to unpack
"packages-0.3.2a.tar.gz" (it hung during the "tar -xzvf -").
I found the following message in the archives -- is there an official
bug fix, or should I follow the instructions

If you go to mysql.com, you will find both source code and binaries for
OS X. I originally got Fink for MySQL as well, but after a great deal
of investigation, I realized that it would actually be better to compile
my own (which I did with no problems). Fink will want to install other

I personally use it w/a web frontend, but apparently has nice Perl and C
libraries, so it could in theory be used for any conceiveable
