After countless emails asking for help, after hours and hours of
downloading and compiling, it is done. Gnome is ready to go. I remember
something about having to edit the xinitrc (remove calls to twm and put
in Gnome session) which I did. I then launched XDarwin. It started
launching and then
Try starting XFree86 from a Terminal window instead of XDarwin.app : just
do 'startx -- -quartz' in the Terminal. That way you can see what the
system is reporting as an error. Then send us the output.
