Is it possible to start up GNOME using gnome-session or something else
without using the sudo command? It scares me to be working as root.

Yes, of course you don't have to run it as root. Are you having problems
launching X11/Gnome without using sud
If you can provide me with some guidance about what files to set the
permissions for, I'd appreciate it.
Here's what I type:

Here's the error message I get:
Gnome-ERROR **: Could not create per-user Gnome directory

You were absolutely right about the permissions. I changed the owner
from root to my account on the files identified in the error messages
and now I don't have "sudo" everything.
