Thanks Alexander. I'm not sure what your comment about the default tree means but "TheSin" already suggested the "fink install sed” solution and it did work for me. (It looks like he did not copy the list-serve with his suggestion.) Indeed, the -i flag (on its own) is not provided in Apple's BSD
