A self-update to this thread: Unplugging any mouse before starting minicom makes it work right every time.
Once the modem responds you can plug the mouse back in.
I am currently using a Kensington 5 button mouse so I've asked them for help - no reply yet.
I know I tested with a stock mouse before - but I'm not sure I uninstalled the Kensington software as well.
On the other hand, I have uninstalled the software with the Kensington mouse and get the same problem.
i.e. Stock mouse + maybe Kensington software = problem
Kensington mouse and software = problem
Kensington mouse without software = problem
No mouse of any kind = no problem (except I'm annoyed by unplugging my mouse every morning)

Still hoping for suggestions :-)

I'm using minicom with a new eMac. It doesn't seem to be able to connect to the internal modem consistently.

Using either /dev/tty.modem or /dev/cu.modem I get
minicom: cannot open /dev/tty.modem: No such file or directory

If you just keep trying it will work - usually on the third or fourth time.
It will then work every time for a while (15 minutes?) and eventually revert to earlier behaviour.

I've experimented with a couple of different modem reset commands as well as not resetting the modem at all with no change.
Since the docs seem to indicate it's an internal USB modem I've tried disconnecting all the USB devices except the stock keyboard and mouse - no change.

I've also tried `cat AT > /dev/tty.modem` in hopes of 'waking up' the modem but this just hangs the session.

Suggestions please?
Brian
