The locate output you sent earlier suggests otherwise; it's possible that
something else you placed its own file at /usr/local/install, but however
it got there, that file is masking the presence of the actual
% sudo /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb
I ran the above and then ran:
% locate install | grep '/install$'
jamesk @ /Users/jamesk@HOME-->locate install | grep '/install$'
/Applications/MacOS_security/administration_tools/arusers/install
/Applications/MacOS_security/firmware_passwords/secureit1_05/
No I haven't installed my own coy of install
After the first difficulty I trashed all of /sw and reinstalled fink
from fink.pkg image I downloaded.
I can't seem to install fink without alot of circular dependency errors,
yet my install of Xfree86 went fine and still works.

I'm having a problem installing gtk+ by itself or gimp
I get Selecting previously deselected package gtk+.
