Friends and fellow Finksters, Thanks to Mike and Ron's debugging and testing, the case of the missing text on gtk+ on OS X 10.4 has been solved. I have committed the last working version of cairo to 10.4-EOL in fink. After selfupdate, you should see cairo-1.11.2 under 10.4-EOL/graphics. "Update" to that, and your text should be visible in GTK applications again.
