Also look at the file PkgVersion.pm and see if modifying the default C*FLAGS and LDFLAGS work. But as Dave said, there's a very good chance that some low level library won't easily build as universal and anything downstream of it won't either. I was never able to compile a universal gettext and so that pretty much stopped all my efforts in its tracks.
