You should read the Fink user's guide, section requirements, subsection
developers tools. http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/users-guide/intro.php#req

I think I solved the problem of finding another source for
gimp-1.2.2.tar.gz. I downloaded it directly via ftp.gimp.org into my
/sw/src directory. This apparently enables fink to forego downloading
the file from its source.
However, now I am encountering a new problem. When fink initiates

I'm trying to install gimp by entering "fink install gimp" into the
command line.
Eventually, I get the following:
curl -L -O ftp://gimp.cs.stevens-
tech.edu/mirrors/gimp/gimp/v1.2/v1.2.2/gimp-1.2.2.tar.gz
^C### curl failed, exit code 2
Downloading the file "gimp-1.2.2.tar.gz" failed.

The magic words depend on what exactly fails and how you tried ...
Nevertheless, it is probably not too practical to downgrade a large
package such as XFree86 ... you probably must remove the 4.2 version
before attempting anything and that might break any apps installed in
the X11R6 directory
Some complements to Chris' advice:

You're trying to [manually] build xmms-1.2.7. Looking at the package file
in /sw/fink/dists/unstable/main/finkinfo/sound

I just installed OS X on a G3 PowerBook. Everything went well enough
as far as I can tell.
Because it has a smaller (by today's standards) harddrive, I decided
to just use the stable binary packages so I wouldn't need to install
the developers tools. I also decided that I would use Mozilla, but
Correction: you'll need to do both "fink rebuild nedit" and "fink reinstall
nedit".

Hello,
I am getting the following error on xmms from unstable. Does anyone have
an idea of the dependency that I might be missing?
Thanks,

just had a similar problem (error: node exists) whan upgrading. in my
case it worked to remove the mentioned package first and then upgrade.
so removing libjpeg first and then installing the same or a newer
version might do the trick. if you do it via the fink remove command you
have to
