I want to install the DBI:Mysql perl modules using fink and use it with
the perl install that is bundled with panther. Is this possible? If it
is not is there a version of perl that is apt-getable that is more
recent that 5.6?

Yes. It is even the default. All the *-pm581 modules use the system
perl, just like fink itself.
