compilers with fink, I decided to post how it worked for me.
This is quite tricky, requires root access and messing with the Fink
code, be sure you know what you are doing!

These builds (from source) generally take many hours on my machine, so
there is a big premium in completing a partial build rather than trying
it again from scratch.
I've been troubleshooting a strange X11 font problem, and have
discovered that /etc/fonts/ is missing. I did two things around the
time of the disappearance:
1. move fink to a directory on another volume symlinked to /sw, and
2. remove fink's xorg package to go back to Apple's X11.

apt-shlibs to compile. I have tried a number of
tricks, including several complete reinstalls
(deleting the previous /sw directory) of fink-0.7.1
from the disk image.
