I now have a working install of Evolution that supports. Thanks to all
for your advise.
This is the path I took:
fink install gnome-vfs-ssl
*installed the above with it's SSL deps
fink rebuild evolution
*build found freshly installed SSL and compiled Evo with SSL support
fink install evo
