I do have the same problem with xdvi comming with the tetex package.
I "fixed" it by installing the package xdvi which provides another error while compiling the fonts.
This last problem can be solved by copying into the terminal lines like
mktexpk --mfmode ljfour --bdpi 600 --mag 0+525/600 --dpi 525 cmtt8
This is not very clean but it works while the behavior of xdvi from tetex package is not working.
