i've come across odd behaviour with subplots in octave. i've rebuilt
both octave and gnuplot and the problem persists and is the same
regardless whether i'm using aqua or x11 terms.
basically, only the bottom-most and left-most plot gets labels,
titles and numbering. the other plots display
