Look into your xv.info file! There the correct name of the archive is recorded,
for example as
xv-%v.tar.gz

As Alexander already mentioned, you should have downloaded the archive into
/sw/src, the directory where Fink stores the software archives. This step could
no be perform

That's why Fink exists.
If you copy xv-3.10.a.tar.gz, and it MUST be xv-3.10.1.tar.gz, into
/sw/src, you can just use "fink install xv"
