You're probably safe to reinstall freetype-shlibs now that the build is
done.

Do you have by chance freetype (-shlibs) installed? Try to remove
those, too.

Do you have freetype (no 2) installed? That also causes the problem.

I had the same problem, I removed Freetype2 and associated shlibs. It seems Apple's
X11 provides it now and having two installed mixed up GTK+'s configure script.
