I think that must have been the problem. I deleted Firebird and reloaded it
and now I have managed to get to the examples and also started the creation of
my own database.
I was mislead by the appearance of the Connect or Create prompt in thinking
that Firebird was running.
With help I have now got as far as SQL login but seem to be unable to connect
to the sample database. Keep getting connection failures.Anyone help please?

Have downloaded Firebird SS2.5.4 and new user was set up but can't access any
commands from either my or Firebird user.
have tried as suggested

I have used Pascal and Microsoft Access
