I used to use hog fuel but it is difficult to keep raked or level. The best
thing I have used is called screenings which is a mix of sand and fine
gravel. The horses love it as they feel sure footed on it and it is easy to

The best hog fuel in these parts comes from our local lumber mill. It comes
out of their de-barking operation. Mostly it is red pine, white pine, and
aspen. They also use it to fuel their boilers.
