FL has its good points, no state tax, for example. but you will want to check
out the increase in your auto ins for sure, rents are higher, as is elec
(A/C). The ins will be higher because of the tourists who drive around not
knowing where they are going (if you think midwesterners forget how to drive
every winter, tourists are worse) and the demand for apts drives up the
prices. During peak vacation times you can pay up to $5 for a McD hamburger
if you are on a beach area compared to regular price 1 mile inland. They have
different insects there and the Palmetto bugs fly. Seems like everywhere is
infested with roaches, and what we call crab grass is their normal grass.
Plus, check out any information you can find on fire ants, as they are
EVERYWHERE. Not trying to put a damper on your wishes to move to a warmer
climate, but like I said - FL has it's good points also. The weather is
amazing if you can get around the hurricanes.
I could never get used to seeing a Santa figurine on someone's lawn in shorts,
or a sleigh on a roof and it's 90 degrees outside. I also really missed the
change of seasons. But that was just me. I think it is a great place to
visit, but I didn't like living there.

  Subject: Florida Fjordies?

  Hello Fjord Friends!

Someone recently wrote to the list looking for fjord
people in Florida. A few weeks ago I was in Edgewater
visiting relatives. I am seriously considering
relocating to the Volusia county area in the fall from
the arctic Midwest. I know there would be lots of
logistics to work out (apt/rent, job and accomodations
for my fjord, and possibly my tb gelding). As a
certified Pharmacy tech I dont think I'd have trouble
finding a job, but it does seem the cost of living is
a bit higher there. I did visit a couple boarding
stables while on my vacay. Ideally I would hope to
work off part of my boarding/training expenses.
I just can't see myself surviving another winter here!

  Any thoughts?

  Gina L.
  Menominee, MI
