i lived in So. Calif. and owned horses there for over 40 yrs. You did not
say what part of So. Calif. you are in, coastal, high desert, valley, ect.
The cold is not the problem there, thou it can get down to 12 F with 40 to
70 MPH winds in the high desert, the problem is the heat, where it can be 40
F one day and 3 days later it can be 80 to 95 F. in Agua Dulce it would be
28 F in the early morning, 75 F to 80 F in mid-day and back down again at
night during the winter when i worked at a horse ranch there. a horse with a
winter coat meant for 30 F to 40 F suffers in 80 F to 95 F heat (try wearing
a body lenght winter coat on a 95 F day). Depending on where your horse is
in So. Calif., how your horse is stabled, your horses winter coat and his
work load, you may want to body clip in the fall and blanket on the colder
nights/days. i had to do this with my horse that had a longer winter coat.
