Sue, I'm very sorry to hear about Kez.  Unfortunately, these things happen and
with no data to indicate that the mare may have had a problem, breeding her
was a responsible decision based on what you knew.  Please do not blame
yourself for Kez's problem.

Kate, the reason so many horses are foaled in the spring and summer, at least
in the Morgan breed, is that for show purposes, all horses are a year older on
1 January, so a May foal will be shown in the yearling classes the following
year.  This artificial birthdate puts late foals at a disadvantage.  A
September foal will be much smaller and more immature than a foal from April
or May and this will be readily observable in the yearling classes; yet, when
they are mature, the horse that was a September foal may be a much bigger
horse than the one from April or May.
