Kate, the reason so many horses are foaled in the spring and summer, at least in the Morgan breed, is that for show purposes, all horses are a year older on 1 January, so a May foal will be shown in the yearling classes the following year. This artificial birthdate puts late foals at a disadvantage. A September foal will be much smaller and more immature than a foal from April or May and this will be readily observable in the yearling classes; yet, when they are mature, the horse that was a September foal may be a much bigger horse than the one from April or May.
