Gail here. Yes, I do have "Rom." He spent the winter at Brian Jensen's in
BC being trained to drive (I have great videos of Brian driving him to the
"travois-with-outhouse-bench-seat" - and plowing through deep snow drifts).
He is now at my place in Northern California. I would *love* to have a jpg
of his new baby (or any other babies from previous years) for my files. I'm
told he produces nice heads and nice movement. I got to see the Pearson's
three year old mare by him this spring, and I would love to follow this baby
and Rom's other offspring as well.

I'm attempting to get myself up to speed on stallion keeping/breeding,
before advertising his services, so for this year, Rom may only produce one
foal - from my mare Luise (by Anvil's Regin, out of Lena). (I didn't
exactly mean to get involved in owning a stallion - but Jean Ernest made me
do it after we saw him together at Libby.) :)

I am considering setting up to do AI with Rom via cooled semen as we are a
long way from the biggest population of Fjord mares. I would be interested
in hearing from listers about their interest/willingness in doing the
necessary vetwork, etc, to do AI via cooled semen. Is there a market out
there (for any Fjord stallion - not just Rom) that would justify my setting
up with the equipment to collect and ship? My vet said he would do the
collection and testing - but I'd still have to invest in the mount and other
equipment. You can reply privately to [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you wish - though
I think there may be other stallion owners on the list who would be
interested in this.

As an afterthought, the other question is whether Fjord stallion owners
could facilitate the sale of cooled semen by locating good regional
"insemination centers" to which mares could be brought for teasing,
palpation and insemination?

For example, I just spoke with a woman in Arizona who has a large "mare
motel" and takes in mares for breeding and stallions for
breeding/collection. Perhaps there are other reliable centers like this
located near the rural areas where most Fjord mares seem to live. At these
centers the outcall costs of the vet are shared with a number of other mare
owners, and the people and vets involved are thoroughly familiar with the
procedure. Facilitating AI in Fjords would go a long way toward making it
worthwhile for stallion owners to have their boys evaluated so as to bring
in "business" from all over the country.
