This message is from: GAIL RUSSELL <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Our foals tendons were not so severely contracted that we had to use splints, but they did cause the foal to walk on its toes. After about 10 days the toe of one hoof had started to wear off and roll over - at which point the vet said he needed to glue on his "tiny little Gucci's." They are plastic shoes that cover the whole hoof and prevent the toe from wearing down. That, in turn, allows for leverage from a "long toe, low heel" that will stretch out the tendon.
In essence, we were creating the very condition that, in adult horses that have been poorly shod and/or trimmed, causes tendon damage by overstressing the tendon. Took about two weeks and the foot looks perfectly normal. One hoof did not need treatment - it cured itself over time because the toe did not start wearing.
