Our foals tendons were not so severely contracted that we had to use
splints, but they did cause the foal to walk on its toes.  After about 10
days the toe of one hoof had started to wear off and roll over - at which
point the vet said he needed to glue on his "tiny little Gucci's."  They are
plastic shoes that cover the whole hoof and prevent the toe from wearing
down.  That, in turn, allows for leverage from a "long toe, low heel" that
will stretch out the tendon.  

In essence, we were creating the very condition that, in adult horses that
have been poorly shod and/or trimmed, causes tendon damage by overstressing
the tendon.  Took about two weeks and the foot looks perfectly normal.  One
hoof did not need treatment - it cured itself over time because the toe did
not start wearing.
