Martha--One of the best sets of books I feel are available on foaling,
paturation and post partum are those by Phylis Close entitled, Blessed are
the Broodmares and Blessed are the foals. I am quite suprised that ANYONE
contemplating breeding doesn't have them in their library. These books may
help you with putting mom and baby back together and also for future
breedings.

Personally, I think folks wanting a foal would do best to buy one already
weaned. You get all of the fun of having a foal and some one else has got
it that far and dealt with all of the little foaling issues. You can do
your best to make sure everything goes right and sometimes it does, and
sometimes it doesn't and then it is a lot of time, money, grief and energy.

Three and a half is young to have a foal. Hopefully your mare does fine
when you get her back with baby. I won't breed until the mare is four so
that she has baby at five. I think she is more mature physically and just
as important, mentally. But that is only my opinion.

I am glad the baby survived and hope everything continues to be great from
here on in!
