Hi Sue!

I had my colt gelded at 2½ years of age, but he was easy to handle and I wanted
to have him evaluated first. Here in Sweden, where most foals are born in the
springtime, many horse-owners geld their colts before their second summer.
Other waits until after the pasture period. I think it's individual. If you
have problems handeling your horse, I think it's always better to geld as long
as your vet says your horse is mature enough.

Most Fjords here have to wear shoes since if you ride or drive it's hard to
avoid using the gravel roads. There are Fjords used for logging and riding in
the woods only, and these seldom wear shoes. But I belive that most Fjords that
should be ridden/driven on the road need shoes. Of course this is individual
too. I remember a Belgian mare from the farm where I spent much time during my
childhood. She was driven in the hard roads (and in the fields of course) her
whole life and was NEVER shoed! She must have been at least 50% heavier than
the average Fjord, so I'm sure there are Fjord who will do fine without shoes
too.

Regards

Anneli
